Buchenwald
Buchenwald was one of the largest concentration camps located in Germany. It was a massive work camp, with several surrounding smaller work camps. Buchenwald was known for being a labor camp. During its years of operation approximately of 238,980 prisoners from 30 countries would pass through it's gates. Prisoners were confined in the northern part of the main camp. The SS guard barracks and camp administration was located in the southern part of the main camp. The camp was surrounded by barbed fence wire, watch towers, and automatic machine guns. Bunchenwald has a large quarry where prisoners first began their exhausting manual labor (U.S Holocaust Museum).
